What a solar installation really costs in Kenya in 2026
The components, the costs people forget, and how to judge whether a quotation is honest — without us inventing figures we cannot stand behind.

"How much does solar cost?" is the most common question we are asked, and the honest first answer is unsatisfying: it depends entirely on what you are asking it to do. A backup system for lights and Wi-Fi and a full off-grid installation for a farmhouse are both "solar", and they differ by an order of magnitude.
What we can do is show you exactly what makes up the cost, so that when you receive a quotation you can tell whether it is complete, and whether it is honest.
The seven line items in every real quotation
1. Panels. Priced per watt. Higher-wattage modules usually cost slightly more per watt but need less mounting hardware and less labour per kilowatt installed, so the installed cost per watt often works out lower.
2. Inverter. Priced by kilowatt rating and type. Hybrid costs more than grid-tied because it manages battery and backup switching. Three-phase costs more than single-phase.
3. Battery. Usually the largest single item in a hybrid system, priced by usable kilowatt-hours. This is where quotations most often differ, because it is where the specification is most negotiable.
4. Mounting. Rails, clamps, feet or roof hooks, and the fixings appropriate to your roof type. Modest per panel, but not free — and using the wrong fixings for a mabati roof causes leaks that cost far more to fix than the correct hardware would have.
5. Protection and balance of system. DC breakers, surge protection, combiner or distribution boards, MC4 connectors, UV-stable DC cable and earthing. Individually inexpensive, collectively significant, and the first thing an under-priced quotation quietly omits.
6. Installation labour. Mounting, wiring, commissioning and handover.
7. Delivery. Panels are large and fragile, batteries are heavy. Delivery upcountry costs meaningfully more than delivery within Nairobi.
The costs people forget
Consumer unit work. Backing up specific circuits often means separating them at the distribution board. If your existing board is full, old, or has no room for the changes, that work is real and should be quoted rather than discovered on installation day.
Earthing. Many older Kenyan installations have inadequate earthing. Solar equipment needs it done properly, and if yours is not up to standard it must be corrected.
Roof repair or strengthening. Occasionally a roof is not in a condition to carry an array, or a leak should be fixed before panels go on top of it. Better found at survey than afterwards.
Travel for distant sites. Legitimate, and it should be stated as a line rather than buried.
VAT. Every price on this site includes 16% VAT. Some quotations quote ex-VAT figures, which look 16% cheaper until the invoice arrives. Always confirm which you are being shown.
How to compare two quotations properly
Quotations for the same house can differ substantially and both be honest, because they may specify different things. To compare them fairly, normalise:
- Panel capacity in watts, not panel count. Six 450W panels and four 615W panels are different arrays.
- Battery usable kWh, not nominal. A lead-acid bank of 10kWh nominal offers about 5kWh usable; a 10kWh LiFePO4 offers about 9kWh. These are not the same product.
- Inverter continuous rating and surge rating.
- What protection hardware is included. If one quotation lists DC breakers, surge protection and a combiner box and the other does not, the cheaper one is not cheaper — it is incomplete.
- Whether installation is included, and what "installation" covers.
- Whether VAT is included.
A quotation that is 30% cheaper is almost always specifying less. Find out what before assuming you have found a bargain.
Warning signs in a quotation
No brand or model numbers. "5kW inverter" is not a specification. You cannot check a warranty, read a datasheet or verify compatibility without knowing what you are buying.
Battery capacity without chemistry or depth of discharge. "10kWh battery" tells you almost nothing on its own.
No protection hardware listed. Either it is missing from the installation — which is dangerous — or it is missing from the quotation and will appear on the invoice.
Savings promised without stated assumptions. Any credible savings figure must state the tariff assumed, the peak sun hours used and the system losses allowed for. Without those, the number is decoration.
Payback claims that assume everything goes perfectly. Payback depends on your actual consumption. A conservative estimate that turns out better is a happy customer; an optimistic one that disappoints is a complaint.
Where the money is best spent
If your budget is constrained, the components deserve different priority.
Do not economise on protection. DC surge protection and correctly rated breakers are a small fraction of system cost and prevent the failures that are most expensive and least likely to be covered by warranty.
Do not economise on the inverter. It is the brain, it runs constantly, and replacing it means downtime and labour. Buy a reputable unit with the surge headroom your loads need.
Panels are the most commoditised item. Tier 1 modules from established manufacturers are broadly comparable; buying the best price per watt among reputable brands is rational.
Battery is where you can genuinely phase. Start with the storage you need for essential backup and add capacity later — provided the inverter and battery family you choose support expansion. Confirm that at purchase, not afterwards.
Why we do not publish a "typical system price"
You will find sites that advertise "3kW system from KES X". We do not, for two reasons.
First, such figures almost always exclude something — installation, protection hardware, delivery, or VAT — so they are not the price you will pay.
Second, a 3kW system for a home with a borehole pump and a 3kW system for a home without one are different installations with different battery and inverter requirements. Quoting one number for both misleads one of them.
What we do instead: publish real, VAT-inclusive prices for every individual product, so you can add up exactly what a specification would cost. The total you see is the total you would pay for those items.
The genuinely useful next step
Work out your daily consumption from your KPLC bill or your appliance list, then ask us to size it. You will get a specification with its assumptions listed. Take that specification and have it quoted — by us or by anyone else — and you will be comparing like with like for the first time.
For larger and commercial systems, request a quotation. Anything above KES 500,000 is priced per project after a survey, because at that scale guessing helps nobody.
